The seasons in Portugal

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Below you will find frequently asked questions about the weather and climate in Portugal.

When is the rainy season in Portugal?

Most of the rain falls in the winter months, from November to February. During our travel periods in May/June and September/October, the chance of rain is minimal. You can fully enjoy the nice weather, although a short shower is never completely out of the question.

How warm does it get on the west coast compared to the Algarve?

Along the west coast around Ericeira and Sesimbra, the Atlantic Ocean provides a refreshing chill. It's about 3-5 degrees cooler here than in the Algarve. In the spring and autumn, this temperature difference is just right: pleasantly cool for activities on the west coast and warm enough for beach fun in places like Lagos and Carvoeiro.

When are the best surfing conditions?

Portugal has a year-round surfing season, but September/October are favorites due to the combination of water temperature and waves. You'll also find excellent conditions in May/June, especially at surf spots like Ericeira and Arrifana. For beginners, we provide all the surfing gear, including a good wetsuit!

Isn't the water too cold to swim in during the spring?

In May/June, the ocean is already nicely warmed up. For surfing, you'll use a wetsuit (which we provide), but for a refreshing dip, the water is just fine. In the Algarve, the sea is often pleasant enough to stay in for a long time.

What kind of clothing do you bring in the spring or fall?

During the day, it's warm enough for shorts and t-shirts, but make sure to bring a sweater and long pants for the evenings. Especially on the west coast, it can get quite chilly in the evenings due to the sea breeze. A windbreaker is also handy for the coastal areas.

How busy is the traffic during these travel periods?

In May/June and September/October, it's a great time to drive. With our minivans, you'll always find a parking spot, even in popular coastal towns. The roads are quiet, and you can spontaneously stop at beautiful viewpoints or hidden beaches.

Is it warm enough for the beach in May?

Absolutely! Especially in the Algarve, temperatures quickly reach around 25 degrees – perfect for a beach day. It's warm enough to sunbathe but not too hot for an active day full of adventure.

When is the high season in Portugal?

July and August are peak season. Not only is it busier and more expensive during this time, but it's often too hot for activities as well. During our travel periods, you can enjoy perfect temperatures and a lot more peace and quiet.
