Renting a camper in Portugal: traveling through the Algarve in a minivan.

“Is this really our minivan for the next few days?” That thought crossed my mind when we first saw our Fiat Doblo. A cozy little hut on wheels, which turned out to be perfect for our adventure. Because you know what’s so great about traveling in this minivan? It’s not too big, so you can easily cruise through all the streets. During the day, you have all the freedom to explore the Portuguese coast, and in the evenings, a lovely campsite awaits you with all the facilities you need.

A few handy things to know:

• The maximum speed is 120 km/h on highways
• In villages and cities, you usually drive 50 km/h
• Toll roads are well marked but expensive, try to avoid them
• Be careful with street parking in big cities – it is not everywhere allowed

Refueling in Portugal is straightforward and usually cheaper than in the Netherlands. You'll find gas stations everywhere, both along the highway and in villages. Good to know: at some gas stations, you need to go inside to pay before you can refuel. A credit card is accepted almost everywhere.

During your Camper trip through Portugal, you'll discover the most beautiful spots on the west coast and in the Algarve. Wake up in the morning at a cozy surf campsite in Ericeira, stop by hidden beaches during the day, and arrive in the evening at an idyllic campsite in Arrifana.

• Less is more: too much stuff makes it cramped

• Pack-and-go is the motto: keep your stuff organized

The days have their own rhythm during your road trip in Portugal. You wake up with the sun at one of our lovely campsites, enjoy breakfast outdoors, and calmly plan your route for the day. We've already chosen the routes for you, but of course, you’re free to decide how you want to drive. Around 10 AM, you set off for new adventures. Maybe you'll spot a charming village along the way for a coffee with pastel de nata, or find that perfect little beach for an afternoon dip.
